What is Early Days?

Promoting the development of young children on the autism spectrum

The Early Days initiative (www.earlydays.net.au) provides workshops across Australia for mothers, fathers and other family carers of children with an autism spectrum disorder. It is a four-year $12m national program that is part of the Australian Government’s Helping Children with Autism package.

The Early Days initiative is being developed by the Early Days Collaboration, which includes organisations and individuals nationally recognised for their expertise in Autism and parenting. The Parenting Research Centre is the national coordinator of the Early Days project.

The Early Days introductory Workshop is free for mothers, fathers and other family carers of children aged six years and under who have an Autism Spectrum Disorder or who are currently going through the assessment and diagnosis process. Early Days focuses on the early days of diagnosis, as this is the time when families most need information about autism and how to tackle their child’s complex needs.

Warren Cann, Executive Director of the Parenting Research Centre says that “Early Days workshops provide both up to date information about autism and parenting tools that families can use to promote the development of their child. Parents and carers also get the opportunity to meet other parents and share ideas and experiences”.

The Early Days introductory Workshop is now available in all States and Territories of Australia. Workshops are delivered by Early Days Providers - selected organisations that provide early childhood intervention services to children with developmental delays or disabilities, including Autism. The workshops are facilitated by early childhood development professionals who are experienced in working with families.

Warren Cann says that the delivery of the workshop has been designed to reach as many families as possible, “Early Days workshops will be held in city, regional and rural centres across Australia, whenever and wherever there is enough interest.

Workshops are free and each family who attends the Early Days Introductory Workshop is eligible to receive a $100 support payment to help cover costs such as travel and childcare”.

In addition to the Early Days Workshop, skills sessions will be available later in 2009, “Soon, we will be offering Early Days Skills sessions where parents can learn practical, hands on strategies for dealing with issues such as sleeping, behaviour, play, language and more.

By mid 2009, parents will also be able to access the Early Days programs online, as webinars or self-directed interactive programs. To find out more about Early Days or register for an Early Days workshop in your area go to www.earlydays.net.au or contact Early Days free call 1800 334 155.
